If you want to start ranging you should first choose either a crossbow (weakest but allows for fast fire and holding a shield in your other arm), shortbow, which is faster than a longbow but also weaker, or a longbow, which is strongest but also slowest of the three. Also, crossbows can only use bolts, whereas the other two can shoot standard arrows.

You will want to pick up some leather armor, chaps and a leather head dealy which I forget the name of... regardless, these will be your armor for awhile.

You should start, in my opinion, on goblins or cows, cows preferably because they drop bones and cowhides, as well as meat for bringing your cooking level up and for restoring some health.

The best place to kill cows and goblins both is between Al Kharid and Varrock, where both spawn and lots of em.

After you get to a higher level you can buy better bows, and use better arrows. You will also be able to use studded armor for purchase in Varrock and from other players.

Finally, when you hit level 40, you can start to use Dragonhide Armor, Green Dragonhide being all non-members can wear.
